I just got What No Beer in at the video store all I have to so is go buy it... Has anyone seen it? And does anyone know where to get there hands on a copy of the passionate plumber? I have been dying to see that...
And on my last post I mentioned that I really wanted to meet a Buster Keaton... I did and now we are in love... we are going to be preforming some gags together, one from spite marriage... I'm so happy....

Re: What No Beer?! Passionate Plumber, and My Boyfriend.
Thu, June 29, 2006 - 12:30 PMWhat No Beer has its amusing moments, but it was a terrible idea to pair Buster with Jimmy Durante. Their styles don't work together. Buster's understated approach kind of gets lost among Durante's manic schtick and the plot and direction are nothing to write home about either. It's worth seeing, but don't pay very much for it. I've not seen The Passionate Plumber. There's a video rental in SF that has some quite obscure Keaton films, such as Boom in the Moon, but they don't have that one. -

Wed, July 12, 2006 - 12:29 AMThat's bad ass, here you can only find Keaton's silent films... that is it... it's like her died after. But That's the joy of Bloomington Indiana for you...

Re: What No Beer?! Passionate Plumber, and My Boyfriend.
Wed, July 12, 2006 - 6:58 PMWell, the silents are the best of his work, as after his contract was sold to MGM he never got artistic control of a picture again. All the same Free and Easy, Doughboys, Sidewalks of New York, etc. are worth seeing. BTW that gag from Spite Marriage that you intend to reproduce, Keaton later re-did that one with his wife Eleanor during his series of performances for the Cirque Medrano after WWII.
If you get a chance you should check out ITC's documentary on Keaton - A Hard Act to Follow. It's great. -

Re: What No Beer?! Passionate Plumber, and My Boyfriend.
Sat, September 2, 2006 - 12:56 PM"Free and Easy" while having a pretty formulaic storyline, has two extended sequences that make it worth viewing over and over:
1.) Keaton's blundering though several different film sets on the studio lot (much imitated in later films but rarely improved.)
2.) The lengthy clown/dance/musical numbers on which the film ends-- this sort of abusurdist musical would have been a great genre for Keaton to show his talents instead of all the farces and team-ups with Jimmy Durante. -

Re: What No Beer?! Passionate Plumber, and My Boyfriend.
Sat, September 2, 2006 - 2:30 PMYes, Keaton's marionette dance number in the film within the film is an astonishing scene. That film is marred by the studio having Keaton's character end up as a Chaplin like sadsack, which was the polar opposite of where his strengths lay. -

Actually, just the other day, I saw a Bollywood film called "Paheli" which has a wonderful marionette dance number in the closing credits.
I'm also hoping to track down a copy of a Jackie Chan film alternately named "Miracles" or "Mister Canton and Lady Rose" which from the trailer appears to have Chan as a human marionette (almost certainly an homage to Keaton, since Chan is an avowed fan.)
